Big City Bread Cafe/Meet the Regulars: Annelies
Meet one of our favorite REGULARS
at Big City Bread Cafe:
ANNELIES
Annelies, how long have you lived in Athens?
Since 1979.
What do you do here in the Classic City?
For many years I have worked at the Georgia Museum of Art on the University of Georgia campus.
What do you like most about Big City Bread Cafe?
Big City Bread Cafe is a favorite of mine for three reasons: the people, the food and the environment.
Over the years I have enjoyed listening to live music in the evenings, attending the holiday market on the patio and drive, sitting inside at a booth by the window on a cold and rainy day having a quiet visit with my mother and sharing meals with friends and family of all ages outside where the younger ones could jump, play and make art on the concrete wall and pavers while everyone else sat and talked.
And I am particularly appreciative of the staff and their hard work during this past challenging year. I am thankful for their efforts in keeping the restaurant going while maintaining strong safety measures.
What are some of your favorite memories at Big City Bread Cafe?
My most recent memory is of my granddaughter, Harper, asking me imploringly if she, I and her little sister could walk to Big City Bread, not to eat but to just be there. And so we did but, of course, I thought refreshments were in order after the effort to get there, which was probably part of her master plan after all. At six years old she knows what she is doing.
What’s your favorite time of day to visit Big City Bread Cafe?
My favorite time of day to visit Big City is typically the afternoon for lunch. Sitting outside under the trees and enjoying a nice meal is a rejuvenating break in the day.
However, the morning and evenings when they are open are also pleasant times to be there.
The setting is lovely for any time of day.
What’s your favorite thing on the menu?
I go on binges but my favorite thing on the menu for a while has been the humble BLT - nothing like some good, crispy bacon, fresh tomato and lettuce on buttered toast. And, of course, I have to have my peach iced tea and a treat from the bakery case. The pastries are some of the best in town. I, also, always like to see what special dishes Matthew is offering. He comes up with a lot of creative and delicious appetizers and entrees.
