Big City Bread Cafe/Meet the Regulars: Joey
Meet one of our favorite REGULARS
at Big City Bread Cafe:
Joey
Joey, how long have you lived in Athens?
I came to Athens as a college freshman and have, except for a few years in several other locales around the state, been here ever since. After all those years, as well as four UGA degrees (three in music, one in business administration), I still think Athens is great!
What do you do here in Athens, Georgia?
I manage to keep myself busy after retiring from The University of Georgia. My last position at the University was as an academic advisor in the Biology Division where I was selected by students for the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Advisor Award.
Presently a lot of people associate me with chair massage at Earth Fare at Five Points and that has been fun. But I do other types and venues of massage, and much more: career advising (resumes & interview prep, essay coaching, etc), piano, facilitation of a political discussion group at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, and learning as much as can about as many things as I can, AND eating at Big City Bread Cafe.
What makes Big City Bread Cafe special for you?
First, I’ll give some context. My mother and father owned a little restaurant for a time as I was growing up. I learned that restaurants are great places to learn about people, to learn about health, and to learn in the academic sense. When things weren’t busy in my parents’ restaurant, I would often do my homework at a table.
“In the calm early mornings, Big City Bread Cafe is a refuge for me. A place where I can feed the mind (my newspapers!) and the body (great food!), all under the cathedral of green trees.”
Then of course there are the people.
Over the years I have found the staff members to be friendly, dedicated to service, and, importantly, human, with a variety of personalities and interests. It is obvious to me from seeing the reactions of customers that Big City is a great place to meet, to socialize, discuss business, and to celebrate.
Getting together with others has been a key part of my experience at Big City Bread Cafe. I have met with career clients and discussion groups there. In addition, Rick, Gary and I meet every Wednesday morning for a group whose mission is to solve the world’s problems. LOL!
Seriously though, Big City is a great place to do business and have fun.
What’s your favorite thing on the menu?
I pretty much like everything that I have tried. I like the bakery items including croissants and scones, The quiche is delish. I like the burgers. I most often get the veggie burger.
I like the soups and the sandwiches including the Turkey sandwich and the Mozzarella, Tomato, and Basil Sandwich. I like the salads. The other day I got a spring salad for breakfast, which brings me to one of my favorites: The Seasonal Vegetable Saute with an egg white on top. Yummy and soooo good for you!
