Meet some of our favorite REGULARS

Sisters— Bella & Anna
and their childhood friends
Brothers— Coles, Thomas & Andrew
We spoke with Bella about growing up at Big City Bread Cafe:
Bella, how long have you lived in Athens?
I was born and raised in Athens, Georgia. Although I am twenty years old and now off at college in Indiana, I will always identify as a proud Athenian.
What makes Big City Bread Cafe special for you?
Living a five minute walk away from Big City Bread for the past twenty years, it would not be an exaggeration to say I have pretty much grown up here. Ever since I can remember I have been coming to Big City, from drawing with chalk on the patio wall to the cozy Christmas market every winter, Big City Bread is a part of my childhood. Not only is the food delicious, but the community is electric. There is always a familiar face and engaging conversation just around the corner, and the owners Deenan and Matthew and their staff, over all these years, could not be more welcoming.
What do you do here in Athens, Georgia?
Now that I no longer live in the city year round, when I come back to visit my family I try to soak up the many wonderful activities Athens has to offer including going for bike rides on the Greenway, volunteering at Sweet Olive Farm, and eating at the amazing restaurants this town has to offer— including of course, Big City Bread Cafe.

What do you do in Athens?
I work at UGA’s School of Law as a Spanish interpreter, spend as much time as possible outdoors with friends and family, and travel when I can— during non-Covid times.
Tell us about your experience as a regular at Big City Bread Cafe?
We have lived within a block of Big City since we moved to Athens a few decades ago— so I have many, many, memories at Big City. When our first son was about 6 months old, a friend visited us from DC, and we took her to Big City. So many friends and acquaintances came up to speak with us, that my friend asked if we had told people that we would be there at the Cafe that day. She could not believe how many people we knew just happened to be there. That is real community.
What’s your favorite time of day to visit Big City Bread Cafe?
Any and all! Early and quiet is awesome, bustling brunch is fun and I love their dinners under the lights!
What’s your favorite thing on the menu?
Tofu scramble with veggies and a biscuit. Nothing beats it.
