Big City Bread Cafe/Meet the Regulars: Peter, Jim & Nancy
Meet three of our favorite REGULARS
at Big City Bread Cafe:
Peter, Jim and Nancy
Jim, tell us a bit about you and your family— how long have you lived in Athens?
Twenty-three years. We came from Iowa to join our son John, our daughter-in-law Amy, and their children here.
What do you three do here in Athens, Georgia?
My wife and I are retired; our son Peter is disabled but lives independently. (Another of our children—John, and his wife Amy and their two children are also “Athenians.” They are also patrons of Big City Bread Cafe!)
Nan is a champion knitter; Peter is very keen on physical fitness workouts; I used to play tennis regularly, offer classes at OLLI (formerly “LIR”), and am still fair to middling at cribbage. We’ve been members of the YMCA, Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation (now Historic Athens) and the Athens Land Trust. Nan has worked as a volunteer at the public library, and Peter has been a helper in the elementary schools.
What makes Big City Bread Cafe special for you?
The three of us (Nan, Peter, and myself) “discovered” BCB early in our residency in Athens and began coming here for breakfast, usually on Thursdays. When the weather suits, we especially enjoy the patio. But inside is also very pleasant. When we first started coming, the trees on the patio were just getting started, which tells you that we, indeed, ARE longstanding regulars. Over time we got well acquainted with the staff and also with some of the other Thursday regulars.
It’s hard to answer specifically what makes Big City Bread special to us because we always look forward to coming, and the thing about being “regulars” is just that: we enjoy our regular visits. (True: sometimes “special” visits accompanied by guests and other members of our far-flung family certainly count as “special.”)

What’s your favorite time of day at Big City Bread Cafe?
Breakfast (not too early)! We do have lunch, even dinner, on occasion when Big City does dinners. Always a pleasure, but breakfasts are our regular time.
What’s your favorite thing on the menu?
This varies—from time to time and amongst the three of us. But Peter is often drawn to your “special”; Nan is particularly devoted to “the birds nest,” and I often choose scrambled egg, bacon (or sausage), and toast. French toast (half order is plenty!) is also a grand seasonal choice! Coffee is as excellent as it is essential!
